I'm a week late with this post, but hey, they're still 3! We had a Curious George B-day party for Colin & Ava, and they had 5 little friends celebrate with them! They got 3 candles each on the cake and lo and behold, they both blew 'em all out with one puff! They are certainly little people now! Favorite phrase: "I do it all by myself!" And if I help, a tantrum ensues. Fine, walk with your shoes on the wrong feet! : )

Halloween in November

Due to the October Nor'easter, many towns had to delay their Trick-or-Treating -- ours was pushed to Friday! Our neighborhood has some steep driveways, so we only made it to 5 houses with the twins, but that was plenty for them! Plus, they took great pleasure from handing out candy "to all their friends!" Note to friends and family: never give my kids more than 2 pieces of candy in one day. Colin's feet weren't even touching the ground as he ran around the living room bouncing off the furniture. Thanks. : )

Snow? In October?

And that inch of snow was nothing compared to what is to come this evening -- a Nor'easter folks! Obviously, the kids don't mind the snow, and neither do we. However, since most of or trees here in Charlton still have their leaves, all that snow may mean downed trees which = down power lines = no water. But let's not think of that! Michael is off buying wood for the fireplace so we'll at least have heat in the event of an outage!

Yesterday, I showed the twins how to make pine cone bird feeders which we hung on some skinny branches so that hopefully the squirrels wouldn't get them. Unfortunately, the squirrels out here are, well, squirrely. They broke those branches and probably fell to the ground, but they still made off with the loot!

We recently headed up to northern Maine for my 20 year high school reunion -- ack! The best part is that the twins got to spend time with Memere & Pepere and Michael and I were able to do some fly-fishing. Another plus was that the Northern Maine Fair was up and running in Presque Isle so the kids got to visit with tons of farm animals!

We had a lovely visit from Michael's brother and his family! And other than it being so hot and humid that our eyelids were sweating, it went off without a hitch! Wish they lived closer though. Bad Mommy only took a few pictures since she was busy chasing, cooking, cleaning the whole weekend. Oh well. At least this picture was a peach!

The Fourth

Happy late fourth of July America!! We spent our Monday morning at Westville Lake in Sturbridge/Southbridge for some fishing and running amok in big wide open fields. Lots of fireworks on our own lake -- Glen Echo -- that night, but amazingly, the twins did not stir. Wish I could sleep that soundly!!

Father's Day Weekend Mega-post

Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there! We were graced with one of the best weekends we've had since last summer and we took full advantage of it! Saturday morning we drove out to Tougas Farms in Northboro -- it's a super family-friendly pick-your-own farm. June in New England means it's STRAWBERRY season! Not the tough and wicked seedy berries you get at the grocery store...no, these are shiny, sweet, juicy red orbs. The kids had an absolute blast using their twist and pull method they learned from a Special Agent Oso episode. After we had eaten our way (and picked some too!) through the field, we headed over to their goat pen. Colin and Ava enjoyed feeding the baby goats; and yes, they had hand-washing stations for your post-animal experience! We capped off the morning by taking head shots with a sunflower mural, easting hot dogs and sipping on some fresh lemonade.

On Sunday, we kept it in the neighborhood, but still had a blast. We hoofed it on down to our lake and Michael got to throw in his fishing line while the kiddos splashed in the water. When Daddy reeled in a good sized Bluegill, Colin nearly poked its eye out while trying to pet it. Fearless!!

We decided that splashing all day seemed like a good idea, so we started out by putting a sprinkler ball in the kiddie pool. In the afternoon, we all went for our first dip in the big pool, and despite their shivering, they had a fantastic time!

Easter Egg Hunt!

Easter turned out to be a very nice day (of course until it suddenly started to rain)... Welcome to Spring!

Daddy hid some plastic eggs around the yard and initially the twins were like, "Um, what's the point of this?!?" Soon enough they got the hang of it and were running around the yard looking for eggs... so we had to keep stealing eggs from their bags and re-hiding them. They didn't seem to notice.

We also picked up some handheld bubble blowers as the whole blowing-the-bubble-wand attempts usually result with a chin full of drool or the wands being eaten. I'll have to work on that this summer!

Memere & Pepere come to town!

This is the chant in the house these days, even though my parents already went back home. I can even con the kids into eating their food by saying that Memere and Pepere are watching or want them to eat. Hey, you do what ya gotta do, right?

Now that Dad is fully retired, they'll hopefully be able to visit more. Dad and Michael even found the time to build me a raised-bed garden! So come back soon for the many projects I have around the yard...whoops, I mean come back so you can play with Colin and Ava since they already miss you!

Gotta Get Outside!

As long as it's not raining/snowing and provided that the windchill isn't below, well, chilly, we go outside. Winter never bothered me until I became a Mom...especially a stay-at-home one. Be gone winter! We want to play outside without face-planting into a snowbank or falling into a muddy puddle. (Well that might be fun!) Spring is here...and above, Colin is modeling his new LL Bean mud season gear. I even spied tulip shoots coming up from my fall planting -- oh joy!

Alas, Friday's forecast says something like 6 inches of snow!?!? But let's not dwell on that!!

Ava's First Haircut

At over 2 years old, we had yet to cut Ava's curly locks. The ringlets hid all the frizzy baby hair and uneven lengths. The inability to put a comb through even super-conditioned hair brought me to the point that I dreaded -- bringing her to the salon. If Colin's first trip (see below) late last summer was any indication as to how Ava would react, I would be up to my ears in tears. Michael was very smart and sly about saying that he'd stay home with the boy for some alone time. This way he wouldn't have to experience the horror. Thank goodness that Snip Its has seatbelts on their salon chairs and a kind bubble-blowing receptionist to calm Miss Ava down!

Oh and of course I forgot both my camera AND my phone on the kitchen counter. So here's the blurry after picture taken at home!

Holiday Hiatus

As I'm sure you all know -- the holidays are hectic. Packing, unpacking. Packing unpacking. Laundry, cooking, cleaning. Repeat. We made the trek up to Caribou in northern Maine for Christmas...hard to believe their lack of snow up there in comparison to even central Maine. We even attempted to take them to church on Xmas eve. I say attempted because at first we sat with all the regular folk before the realization sunk in that 2 wiggly toddlers really needed to be in the cry room. Then the whole church became standing room only and the heat was cranked making my patience wither. So, out to the parking lot we go only to realize that we were boxed in. Oh the nightmare! Major fail! In the end, Ava was content being held by Pepere and Colin watched Yo Gabba Gabba videos in the car with Daddy.

In the end, we had a great time...we took the twins out sledding and Pepere even gave them each a ride on his snowmobile. They got to sit on Santa's lap for a photo op and even got to ride Santa's train at the Aroostook Centre Mall.

Ava not only ate her ice cream cup, but stole Colin's as well!

Happy Birthday to my now TWO-year old twins! Their birthday was on Friday, but we were in sunny Penfield, NY for Thanksgiving which gave me no time to post! I'll also follow this post up with some pictures of our visit with family.

My little nuggets are no longer babies...they are definitely toddlers, little people if you will. When I was pregnant with them, I remember the strong desire to at least make it until Thanksgiving, because that would only be a month early. It was my mental goal to hold on until then to give them the best possible chance. I like to think that we made it -- albeit 2 hours shy. And they did have a great start...just 2+ weeks in the NICU at Beth Israel in Boston without any need for respiratory aid.

And now Colin knows his ABC's and how to count to 10?!? He's two?!? And Ava can build block castles to the sky (until Colin comes and knocks them down of course!)

And why is it that my kids don't like CAKE?!?! As you can see below, we were thankful that someone did -- Hi cousin Katie!!!

Just a few more fall photos! Colin has since had his hair cut -- boy, did he need it! If only I had 20 hands, it would be easy to get 2 toddlers to sit still, look at the camera AND smile for a picture. My advice is to put them on something -- a bench, a rock, just something that let's their feet dangle giving you a millisecond to snap your shot!

Last week, the MOM's Club of Charlton hosted a Halloween party at the library. Cupcakes, dancing, games and even a parade through the Adult and Children's floors in search of candy! I'm so glad that I joined this group of moms...it's an invaluable resource for me and the twins since we left our friends and comfort zone back in Boston. Colin chose a monkey costume (again!) and Ava was completely smitten with this peacock costume we saw in Old Navy. I also had to include some pictures of Ava wearing my witch hat complete with hair attached! We have 2 more parties this week plus Halloween night itself, so I'm sure we'll have more pictures!

Picture-perfect autumnal weather. That describes this past weekend which has now been sandwiched between 2 dismal rainy blustery weeks. I am just thankful that we took advantage of the outdoors because being stuck inside stinks!

On Saturday, we took the twins to Westville Rec Area for a walk. After discovering that the dirt road that goes up alongside the Quinebaug was closed to cars, we unstrapped the twins from their stroller and let them walk amongst the leaves and acorns. This was a nice wide road instead of the skinnier trail I usually take them on so it was a bit safer; however we did have to keep close eyes on their riverbank-diving tendencies.

Later that day, we met up with some friends at Hyland Brewery and Orchard in Sturbridge for some mid-afternoon music, beer and apples. Beth, Mike, Michael and Greta drove out from Boston to this wonderful orchard that they've been going to for years. Now that we only live 15 minutes away, we joined them this year. I can't believe we never have gone there -- what beats live music, fresh-brewed beer, animals, apples, pumpkins, and a great grassy hillside complete with fenced in play-area for the kids? Did I mention the beer? : )

The poor boy looked like Chucky from Child's Play. Crazy, uneven, worst bedhead imaginable. We just resisted for so long because we wanted him to have Fabio's luscious locks. Okay, just kidding, but we didn't want him to have a buzzcut either. Ava's hair is in better shape since her ringlets hide the fact that her hair is uneven. Plus we didn't want to have 2 kids melting down at the salon. And there was no way in hell I was going to do this alone, so I dragged the hubster and Ava along (so she'd be familiar with the place.)

We went to Snip It's in Millbury. It's a kids' salon with huge molded plastic characters, TVs, toys, etc. And the stylists there are more like commandos. Colin's hair was cut in 2 minutes flat...nice and even and handsome. However, within those 2 minutes, Colin went through 5 different emotions: HAPPY (not shown)

So here's a surprising update to the twins' Early Intervention assessment: Colin doesn't qualify! He tests at, above or just slightly below his age in all areas. At this point, one would have to test 6 months behind in one area to qualify. However, Ava will be receiving services through the KDC for her expressive language. Her receptive language was just fine -- she understands most of what we say in an age-appropriate manner. She just doesn't say much. What she DOES do, is hold up items for me to tell her what they're called. I think she's storing all this information and one day will just blurt out full blown sentences. I'm not worried at all about her, in fact, I was hoping that one of them would qualify so that we can get a professional out here once a week to monitor both of them...it's another adult for me to talk to once a week which helps my noggin. They will also go to the KDC once a week for a playgroup.

On Thursday, we checked out toddler lapsit storytime at the Charlton Public Library...the twins did quite well. Although, when Miss Molly asked if they would like to read a book, Colin yelled, "NO!" Which brings me to the real point of this post -- Colin's words.

This past week he learned "NO", which has been great (not!)

On Cape

This past weekend, we visited Papa and Nana down in North Falmouth for a bit of sand and more sand -- all up in baby crevices (ears, noses, fingernails!) They hadn't been to the beach since last year when they were blobs in their stroller, so this was a good time. What better way to wear kids out than to make them haul pails of sand around?

Papa was on water duty and he quickly made Colin a prisoner by filling the hole he was sitting in with said water. This is a good thing because Colin just likes to run. Away. And he doesn't look back.

Ava loved the itty bitty waves in the sheltered little harbor inlet that was our playland. She wanted to play with the big kids who were hunting crabs...and not just hermit crabs, but blues and spiders too!

New Header!

New home, new location, new life - new blog header!

We had outgrown our previous header, which was a pic of us from nearly a year ago (at 9 months old). We're WAY older and more mature now!

So starting anew with a new header for our blog. Other changes are way too time consuming so we'll just stick with this update for now.

Now if only Mom and Dad could get their food blog going again...

Twenty months old. They are closer to two than to one...wow. They are being assessed for EI (early intervention) this week -- when we moved from Boston, our services were discontinued. So we start anew in a different district. We dropped in on the Kennedy Donovan Center last week for open playtime and I was VERY impressed with the facilities...both indoor and outdoor playspaces with tons of puzzles and toys that we simply don't have the room for. If they get accepted, the 2 open playtimes per week will be free of charge as will age-appropriate playgroups. Plus, we get the benefit of in-home therapy for whatever they're lagging in.

Yesterday, we took Colin and Ava to Treasure Land playground in Oxford. This place is a gem. And we had it all to ourselves (I'll just assume it was because everyone was in church, unlike us heathens.) So here are a ton of pictures from our personal playground time!

A Visit from Memere and Pepere

This past weekend, my parents made the trek down from Caribou, Maine to visit our new home for the first time. We had seen them back in May up in Caribou, so the twins had seen them recently. Even so, I prepped for the visit by showing them pictures of Memere and Pepere. I think it really helped -- the minute they arrived, Ava strolled right up to my Dad and wanted to be held by him.

We had lots of fun in the pool, visiting Old Sturbridge Village, playing with their new sand and water table, and just being silly. So here's just a ton of random pictures from the weekend! Enjoy!

A day late, I know, however I'm pooped. This heat is a killer on me, on the twins' moods, on our lawn! Today we had a a nice visit from our friends Scott, Traci and Gavin who trekked up from Manchester, CT in this swamp-awful heat -- thanks for hanging out in the pool with us!

Yesterday, we went for a run along the Grand Trunk Trail in the Westville Lake area which is on the Sturbridge/Southbridge line. Apparently, it's a railbed built by Charles Hays (the President of the Grand Trunk Railways), but after he bought a ticket on the Titanic the rails were never laid. Now we are blessed with an absolutely beautiful stonedust trail shaded by forest that is easy to run on with a big ol' double stroller.

After our run, we let the twins run free in this enormous recreation field without the worry of roads or cars. Here are some shots from yesterday morning.

19-Month Old HAMS

I haven't been keeping up with the monthly updates on the twins, but now that the stubborness that leads up to the terrible age of TWO has kicked in, I am lucky if I know the day of the week. Now with both twins walking, I can't keep up with them! And this is an age where they just don't listen, or don't know that sometimes what I'm telling them is for their own good. Like, "Go down the stairs backwards or you'll get a goose egg on your forehead" or maybe "hold my hand or you'll get flattened by that Fiat". Well, there are no Fiats around here, but I just liked the sound of it.

The twins are really starting to ham it up for the camera now...and not just smiling...we're talking silly faces, puckers and tongues out.

Father's Day Weekend

This weekend marked a few firsts at our new home in central Mass -- we hosted our first house guests and we opened the pool! Michael's brother Drew and his wife Laura drove down from sunny Rochester, NY bringing with them the twins' cousins - Jack, Brady and Katie. We did move to a lake community, so it was also time to dust off our trusty canoe. The boys all went out on our lake and Michael even caught a large mouth bass during their outing.

The twins absolutely loved having their cousins around...hopefully we can do it more often even though it's a bear to wrangle up kids and all their gear and be confined in a car for over 5 hours.

Space Invasion

Toddlers do not appreciate personal space. And, unfortunately for Ava, Colin is all up in hers. If she is playing nicely with something, he comes over and rips it away from her. If she is building an architectural wonder made of blocks, he runs over and smashes it and then smiles. He's not being mean, he just thinks it's loads of fun. Aren't twins supposed to know how to share better than singletons?

If Ava climbs in the laundry basket, Colin has to join in on the fun. Basket, not so bad since there is plenty of space for both of them, but as you will see below, smaller spaces signal an imminent cry from one or both. Ava was alone in that tiny ottoman, Colin somehow climbed in causing Ava to be very upset.

On another note, the one nap thing isn't going so well. Some days it's tolerable at 90 minutes, but the past 2 days, an hour or less? And I can't get them to settle back down once they wake up no matter how hard I try. I really would hate to have to start napping them in different rooms, but I'm losing my sanity here. Any advice?

And we're back from beautiful Caribou, Maine! Our annual trip up to the County was a fly-fishing success and the twins survived the long drive to and from Memere and Pepere's house! The weather was wonderful as we all got to spend some quality time outside.

The Yogurt Experience

Our new life here in Worcester County is all good! Mom loves being home with the twins all day! I think it's paying off -- Colin is now a champ at walking (videos to come) and Ava is getting bolder with her steps. I also think they are starting to understand me better. When I say "let's go for a walk/ride," Colin finds his coat and shoes and throws them at me. Then he throws Ava's shoes at me and puts her hat on his head...ha! Pretty soon he'll start throwing my shoes at me -- note to self, do not leave my clogs in the family room. Ouch!

We are also on Day 2 of going down to 1 nap a day. Yesterday, I went on a run with them in the morning to keep them awake, and we made it until 11:55am before I had to put them down for their nap. They fell asleep right away and slept until 1:35...not too bad.

On to the yogurt experience...the twins have had yogurt before, but I always spoon-fed them YoBaby. It's kind of runny which would be a bad thing for them to handle on their own, so I bought Danonino yogurt by Dannon which is thicker and the containers only hold about an ounce or so.

Behold the mess...it's quite the vision.

We've Moved!

Lots of changes at Boston Twins - including moving out of Boston! That's right, we've left the life of the big city, skipped right over the suburbs, and landed in the country of Central Mass!

We're very excited but at the same time we'll all miss Brianna. We look forward to her visits and convincing her to come out to give the SAHM a break every once in a while!

Wooohoooo! We have lots more room now. And a BIG YARD to play in!!!

We love it here, we are already sleeping and napping better and we love all the carpet we get to play on. We have less forehead bruises without the hardwood!

Mommy and Daddy are finding it much more relaxing, too.

Hello, Elmo...

We are a bit late with this post, let's just say we've got a ton going on. More news soon...

So let's get to the important stuff! Our stats! This was the first time we got to stand on the big boy/big girl scale! No more laying down sans diapers on that baby scale, we're toddlers now!

Little Miss Ava still hasn't broken the 20lb barrier (she's weighing in at 19lbs 9oz), but she did gain 1.75lbs in 3 months and now is registering in the 7th percentile for weight - up from the 5th 3mos ago! She's amazingly long, charting at 31" which is 66th percentile! Talk about growth spurt - she was only 28 1/2 inches last time.

She's finally off formula, and so we begin the transition off bottles completely. This week we'll be going down to only morning and bedtime bottles, putting milk in sippy cups during the day. Our goal is a bottle-free household by 18 months.

Mr. Colin only gained 3/4 pound in 3 months, but this is not surprising. Kids tend to level off after a year - none of this exponential growth we see during their first year.

He weighs in at 21lbs 12oz which is 13th percentile, down a bit from the 23rd last time, but that's okay since he transitioned off formula since then. Colin is 31.25" tall which ranks him at 54%. His noggin has also stopped growing exponentially which puts all previous concerns to rest.

Bear Walking

She's headed for the bathroom where Colin is in the tub. She's in her onesie because at the end of the day, before bathtime, it is strip-down time - everyone's favorite part of the day!

At the same time, the gates holding the babies in the family room come down for the evening and that freedom - coupled with her now non-socked feet (more grip!) - sends Ava making a break for it like she just tunneled out of prison...

Colin Helmet Update

So we appealed our insurance company's decision to deny our claim for Colin's Cranial Remolding Helmet and had been waiting to hear... and waiting... and waiting...

Upon our return from Caribou we had one last Christmas present waiting in the mailbox - a letter from Aetna. Our appeal: accepted! Paid in full! Yay!

The lesson here is obvious: go through with the appeal! For anyone finding us who might be going through the same process, we used a variation of the form letter we found here along with some sections taken from the samples on this helpful site. We kind of edited parts all together, and personalized it, into what we thought sounded right. It works!

Christmas Roundup

We're back from Northern Maine where we spent Christmas with our Grandparents! We got a ton of snow and didn't get out much because we weren't feeling too hot and decided to be extra cranky... Feeling much better now, thanks! We're finally back to 100% after a month of rough seas.

Feeling Better

After over two weeks of "general malaise" (official diagnosis), we are finally feeling better.

Ava seems to suddenly hate forumla now and all she wants to eat is solid foods, whereas Colin just wants his bottles and is less interested (although, still interested) in solid foods.

Unfortunately, it's petite AVA whom we need eating the high calorie formula... and COLIN we want going off formula and onto solid foods... Of course they are doing the exact opposite...

Having fun and being happy again, though - and that's most important.

Roseola?

Poor baby.

UPDATE: They aren't so sure it is roseola. The doctors think it might be hypersensitivity to the amoxicillin they have both been on...

We just can't catch a break... now we have Roseola.

A few things - we're glad that none of this has been serious enough for hospital stays or requiring treatment with anything other than antibiotics and tylenol drops. We're very thankful that these past couple weeks have involved making these guys comfortable and fighting through this with them at home. Things could be much worse and we know these are relatively minor issues compared to what other families have to go through.

However, yikes. These past two weeks have sucked.

Maybe this is the end of the road for sicknesses. That would be great... they are happy and eating and the rash doesn't itch. No more fevers, so that's nice. Ava had this rash for the past couple days and now, sure enough, Colin has it this morning.

Please be the end of the road...

Illness Update

So it got better before it got worse.

Long story short, Colin was getting better before yesterday - but then he came BACK with a 102.4 fever and an emergency doctor's visit.

They suspect he HAD swine flu at one point and that's why the fever had returned. No ear infection (which Ava has and is being treated for with amoxicillin - she's doing much better) - but they decided to run some chest xrays on him because of his cough.

Ever see what they put kids in to get chest xrays? It's called a Pigg-O-Stat... and it is from Medieval Times!

This is not Colin, you can tell because this kid is calm.

Holy moly there are no more tears left after the big scary doctor poking around, followed by being jammed into this thing.

Well, big scary doctor took a look at the results and diagnosis: Pneumonia! Colin has mild pneumonia and is being treated with even MORE amoxicillin.

The good news is he's going to be ok and seems much better today than he was yesterday. And they (and we) slept better last night. However, feeding them bottles has become a chore and we are basically force-feeding them at this point... not sure what to do about that. Our plan to begin him on milk last week is out the door. Trying to keep them up with the fluids but at the same time, he has been vomiting and we don't want him to lose his medicine. Thinking of getting pedialyte but checking in with the little, non-scary doctor soon to see what she says. Ugh.

We really jinxed ourselves, didn't we?

Yeah, no... that was nothing. NOW we're sick. Colds, fevers, ear infection, croupy cough, vomit, no sleep, etc, etc.

One Year Stats

We visited the doctor's this morning for our one year check up and... we're doing great! Percentiles are fine and our growth curves are headed in the right direction. Colin's noggin growth has thankfully leveled off and it was Ava's turn for a little growth spurt!

Colin weighs in at a hefty 21lbs 1oz, up 2.5lbs from 3 months earlier. That puts him in the 23rd %ile - which is great for a little preemie guy. His height is 29.25", up .75" from 3 months ago and putting him at 31st %ile. His growth spurt was really 6-9 months, he is leveling off a bit.
Ava weighs in at a dainty 17lbs 12oz, up 2.4lbs from 3 months earlier and in the 5th %ile. However, her height nearly matches Colin's at 28.5" - up 2" from 3 months earlier and landing her in the 29th %ile. She is long, lean, and mean! (well, not mean)

So it was all good news and everyone was happy and Colin was especially animated and talking and laughing the whole time.... and then the needles came out. FIVE, count them, FIVE injections for each little baby.

The. Sheer. Horror.

Took alot of comforting after that but after a walk back to the car we were all better. Colin even immediately fell asleep on the ride home and then it was recovery naps for all!

We're One! Birthday/Thanksgiving/Cousins Mega Post!

WE'RE ONE!!! We turned one on Thanksgiving Day, which was awesome because someone named "Macy's" threw a BIG PARADE for us in New York and everyone got to enjoy it!

Sick!

I thought we could make it through the twins' first year without any illnesses. Because they are cared for in our own home, it was a real possibility. But sometimes you have to go out into the real world and interact with, well, you know... other human beings who harbor tons of nasty germs. Hey, I know we can't isolate our kids forever... anyone know where we can buy bubbles for them? ;-)

It must have been something that Mommy, Ava and Colin were all exposed to at the same time because we all started sneezing Tuesday afternoon. I thought maybe just allergies, but that night I had a sore throat and Colin was coughing in the middle of the night. Yesterday, Ava woke up with a snot handlebar moustache - not good.

So, we crank up the humidifier, give them Tylenol when needed (no fevers yet, thank goodness), give them nasal saline and suck out the snotties, and give them their sippy cups with water. They are still downing their bottles, so that's great. I also put some lavendar, eucalyptus, rosemary aloe rub on their chests. The good thing is that I don't go into the lab on Thursdays, so I can rest up too.

Here's hoping it won't last long, although the nurse said don't be suprised by 7-14 days!!!

Nice Weather

We were able to sit and play outside all weekend long due to the unseasonably warm weather!

We helped with yard work on Saturday and then yesterday we went to a birthday party in Milton!

We got to hang out with our friend Greta... it was alot of fun and we were all laughing and playing.

Yes, we always wear our Patriots uniforms on game days!

No More Cranial Remolding Helmet!

Colin has graduated! After 10 weeks, Colin's head has been successfully remolded to the tune of 12 millimeters. His head WAS 15mm out of whack looking at diagonal front-to-back measurements, and now it is down to 3mm - which is considered normal and done. Those last few mms are the hardest to get and really, we're all set. His head looks great!

You can see his flat spot on HIS back/left - or the top/right of the picture.

He is having trouble adjusting back to sleeping at night WITHOUT his helmet on, believe it or not, so he's been waking a few times a night pretty upset. We've been weaning him off since this last Saturday night and last night (Weds) was the first night he's slept through the night again.

All-in-all the helmet was a big success and we're glad to have done it. Now, to get that appeal letter out to Aetna to persuade them to reconsider their DENIAL of the service!

Looking through old pics... The changes the babies have gone through are amazing!

And they are not even a year old yet!!

Colin has changed quite a bit - back then (this is about 1.5 months old) he was very fussy because of bad reflux... we felt so badly for him and gave him baby Zantac twice a day. Thankfully, he eventually grew out of it, but feeding him and worrying about his eating during that period was not fun for him nor, consequently, us!

His eyes were still blue back then, they've morphed into his daddy's and grandpa's more hazel/green/gray color you see here. And he's grown into his nose!

New Toy: Bucket of Water

Our friends over at Sotoriffic Twins posted on toys that don't make noise, and one of the suggestions was Water Bucket with floating toys.

Boston Mom thought that was a great idea. So, we got a bucket and floated some toys and put it on a towel in the living room!

Well, the toys didn't last long, they were discarded and the REAL fun began... splashing!

Vegetarian Babies

We - meaning Boston Chef/Parents of Boston Twins - are not vegetarians. We like all kinds of meat, prepared lots of different ways. We've even made Bacon Candy!

However, and in spite of our fondness of carnivorous cooking, we often wish we were MORE vegetarian. We TALK about eating less meat, even ranking our meats into 3 levels of... sin? Starting with mammals as the most "sinful" (beef and pork), down a level to birds (chicken and turkey) as a little less sinful, and finally fish as the least sinful. Don't get us wrong, we don't sit around and bemoan our terrible eating habits while we pull apart a 5-hour-braised pork butt! It's actually when we AREN'T eating meat that we say "we should eat less meat!" We're obviously still working through this ourselves...

So, we are not vegetarians. The babies, however, are another story. They've never eaten meat - not at ANY of our three "levels". They get plenty of protein from their formula, yogurt, oatmeals and bagels and other cereals and grains... we even have them trying tofu! They don't NEED meat by any stretch of the imagination. Many millions of people throughout the world (hundreds of millions, actually) are vegetarian. 10% of U.S. adults identify their diet as "a vegetarian-inclined diet" and 3% of Americans are vegetarians... numbers that are on the rise and numbers that skew towards younger people. Being vegetarian is not only better for your health, but better for the health of the planet!

However, as noted, we are not vegetarians. So it brings us to a crossroads. We don't think we'll raise vegetarians - we, the Parents, are not going vegetarian. We'd like to go MORE vegetarian (eating less "sinfully" - as based on our meat levels - i.e. more fish, less red meat) but where does that leave the babies? At what point, if we keep them veg, will they look at us eating a perfectly roasted chicken and say "Hey! We want some of that, too!" What about - omg - when they come across the inevitable frozen chicken nugget monster? Or - gasps! - microwaved hot dogs? :faints:

Should we just get it over with and steam up some chicken for them? The French-Chicken-In-A-Pot we made the other night would be PERFECT for babies... but we don't even think about giving them any. Instead, we introduce tofu and wonder what to do. (update: they're NOT fans of the tofu!)

Now that the babies are staring down 1 year old (on Thanksgiving, no less! oh, turkey...) we realize we are going to have LOTS of decisions like this one. We have already made many "life decisions" but these decisions seem to be steadily increasing in order of magnitude...

Thoughts on veg or not? Should we just take the plunge? Ava loves her fruits and veggies, but Colin less so. He is really dependant on his 30ozs of formula every day - what about when we take that away from him? If it is inevitable, why wait?

Big Head Colin and his Plagiocephaly Helmet Progress

Oh, Colin - you just have a big head, that's all! You'll grow into it!

We went for an ultrasound on Monday at Childrens Hospital and everything turned out fine... nothing to worry about. What I was worried about was that my son would hate me following the procedure. If you really don't have to ultrasound your kid's head -- don't. They have to put the probe right on the open anterior fontanelle, and your child needs to be perfectly still for the tech to get pictures to then show to a specialist.

As some of you may know, Colin is not a fan of anyone touching his head, covering his head, etc. I have never seen his face turn that shade of red, he was crying so hard and he was all sweaty and slippery making it near impossible for me to hold his hands and head still. I was mortified - but mostly sad for him and his obvious terror. The tech said this is normal and that they sometimes need a third person in there to hold the child down. Ugh. I thought he'd hurl from all the crying and mucus he had swallowed. I thought he'd never forgive me. I tried to sing to him, we shook toys, blew on pinwheels, tried to adminster his paci. Nothing helped. After 15 minutes of sheer agony, it was over. It took a full 5 minutes of me rocking him for all the residual sadness to abate. In other words, I don't recommend it.

So no hydrocephalus, no growths... just a big noggin. Nothing to worry about.

As far as his plagiocephaly progress...his helmet is working WONDERS!! Last week, after only 3 weeks of wearing his "hat", his flat spot has already filled in by half!

His left side flattening was depressed 15mm in comparison to his right side. It's already filled in 7-8mm! We can tell just by looking at him, too. Hopefully, he wont' have to wear it the full 3 months, but he is pretty cute in it!
